4 terrorists captured ahead of Duterte visit in Cotabato

COTABATO CITY – Security forces captured four alleged terrorists hours ahead of President Rodrigo Duterte’s Saturday visit to Cotabato City in southern Philippines, officials said.
Army soldiers and police commandos raided several hideouts of the jihadist group of Abdullah Maute and seized the men. Several weapons, ammunition and improvised explosives had been recovered from the hideouts, all in Cotabato City.
It was not immediately known how security forces tracked down the terrorists, but their arrest came weeks after the military and police arrested TJ Macabalang, the prime suspect in the deadly bombing of a crowded night market in Davao City on September 2 that killed 69 people.
Macabalang and his father Teng and two other men – also members of the Maute group - had been arrested in Cotabato City, the seat of the government of the Muslim autonomous region that Duterte visited.
It was unknown whether Duterte was informed by authorities on the capture of the terrorists who were also being linked by the police to the Davao bombing.
Duterte distributed awards and aids to poor families during his visit and spoke political rhetoric to hundreds of people led by Mujiv Hataman, the regional governor, who welcomed him for the launching of the Comprehensive Reform and Development Agenda. (Mindanao Examiner)

Police kill Maguindanao mayor, 9 others in North Cotabato shootout

NORTH COTABATO – Policemen killed 10 people, including a municipal mayor in Maguindanao province in the Muslim autonomous region, in a shootout early Friday at a roadblock in North Cotabato.
Among those killed was Datu Saudi Ampatuan Mayor Samsudin Dimaukom, who was tagged by President Rodrigo Duterte as an alleged drug lord.
Dimaukom’s group was travelling in two vehicles when policemen manning the roadblock tried to stop them in the village of Bulatukan in Makilala town for inspection, but the passengers opened fire at them and a gun battle ensued. And when the smoke cleared, all the passengers were killed.
There were no reports of police casualties in the fighting which occurred at around 4.30 in the morning. Police officials said they put up the road block after receiving intelligence reports that the vehicles were transporting illegal drugs.
Superintendent Bernard Tayong, a provincial police spokesman, confirmed the killing of the politician and 9 others, whose identities were not immediately known. Several police units were involved in the fire fight.
Aside from Dimaukom, Duterte also linked several other mayors in Maguindanao, one of the sources of illegal drugs in the Muslim region and nearby provinces.

The 35-year old Sierra was also being linked by the police to other crimes in the city. Two of Sierra’s companions managed to escape on a motorcycle and is being hunted down by the police.
