Cotabato vendors appeal government for permanent stalls
COTABATO CITY - Small traders and sidewalk vendors have urged the local government to put up stalls for them to be able to sell and support their livelihoods following a recent crackdown by authorities in downtown Cotabato.
Authorities have dismantled makeshift stalls and structures on sidewalks in an effort to clear the area from illegal vendors who were forced to stop plying their trades. Many of them were selling newspapers, cigarettes among others to augment their family income.
The local government said it was only implementing several ordinances and that it has previously ordered vendors not to block the sidewalks, especially along Sinsuat Avenue.
Vendors have decried the crackdown and appealed to city councilors to look at their plight and for the local government to help them by providing livelihood programs and permanent stalls. The local government also urged establishments and food stalls to renew their business licenses after it was discovered that some of them were operating without the necessary requirements and pertinent permits from City Hall.
(Mindanao Examiner)

Rebels raid Duterte's hometown, blows up building
DAVAO CITY – Communist rebels raided the hometown of President Rodrigo
Duterte in southern Philippines and bombed a factory before escaping in several
vehicles in a daring attack before sunrise that injured a security guard.
Heavily-armed rebels from the New People’s Army arrived in several
vehicles and disguised as government soldiers and members of the National
Bureau of Investigation and immediately disarmed the security guards. One of
them was shot after he tried put up a fight.
The rebels, numbering at least two dozens, quickly poured gasoline and planted
improvised explosives inside the huge compound and detonated them before
fleeing from the area. It was unknown how the rebels managed to sneak into the
city without being detected by soldiers and policemen manning numerous checkpoints
and roadblocks along the way to the factory.
The raid occurred just as factory workers were
protesting against the Lapanday Foods Corporation. And television pictures
showed the compound burning with black smokes billowing from inside the
factory.
Presidential daughter and current mayor of Davao,
Sarah Duterte-Carpio, branded the attack both as insulting and acts of
terrorism as she strongly condemned the raid.
“The
attacks perpetrated by the New People's Army today in Davao City are acts of
terrorism. I take what happened today as a personal insult especially because
the local government of Davao City has been supportive of the peace
negotiations between the national government and the National Democratic Front
of the Philippines...And because I have repeatedly offered to talk peace with the members of the NPA within Davao
City,” the mayor said.
“We condemn these acts committed by a
group that pretends to champion social justice and equality. With its history
of carrying out atrocities and its continued penchant for lawlessness and
bloodbath, the NPA is an organization that is not worthy of our trust and
respect,” she added.
There
was no immediate statement from President Duterte or Jesus Dureza, his peace
adviser, over the attack which occurred ahead of the resumption of peace talks with
rebels in the coming months. The rebels have been fighting for separate state since
the early 60s and the insurgency in the Philippines is the longest in the
world. (Mindanao Examiner)

Philippine Marines kill notorious Abu Sayyaf leader
SULU – Philippine troops were reported to have killed one of
the Abu Sayyaf’s most notorious sub-leaders behind the brutal murders of
kidnapped foreigners and Filipinos in a special operation in the southern
island of Sulu.
Military reports said members of the Philippine Marine Special
Operations Group killed Alhabsi Misaya late Friday in the village of Silangkan
in Parang town, a known stronghold of the militant group affiliated with the
Islamic State.
Misaya’s body was brought to a military base in Jolo town. The
Western Mindanao Command have not release any statement about Misaya’s killing,
but one report branded the daring military operation as an “entrapment to
neutralize” one of the Abu Sayyaf’s notorious executioners.
Misaya was also linked to the spate of terrorism in southern
Philippines and cross-border ransom kidnappings in Sabah in Malaysia and attacks
on cargo ships off Tawi-Tawi province. He was also behind the beheading of
Canadians John Ridsdel and Robert Hall in 2016 and seven Filipino workers in
Sulu, one of 5 provinces under the Muslim autonomous region.
Both
Canadians were kidnapped by 10 gunmen from the resort island of Samal in Davao
del Norte province on September 2015 along with Norwegian man Kjartan
Sekkingstad and his Filipina girlfriend, Maritess Flor. Both Sekkingstad and
Flor had been freed in exchange for huge ransom payoffs. (With a report from
Ely Dumaboc.)
