Zamboanga DepEd official killed during his ‘farewell party’

PAGADIAN CITY – A government school official celebrating his promotion was killed by a lone gunman in a daring attack during a thanksgiving and farewell party in Pagadian City in the southern Filipino province of Zamboanga del Sur, police said Tuesday.
Police said the 47-year old Malcolm Borongan, the Pagadian City Schools Division Superintendent, was killed on the spot from the shooting which occurred late Monday afternoon. Policemen who responded to the crime recovered bullet casings fired from a .45-caliber pistol.
The gunman escaped on a motorcycle after the attack. Borongan was just promoted by the Department of Education as Zamboanga del Sur Provincial Schools Division Superintendent at the time of the killing.
It was unknown how the gunman managed to get into the party compound or the motive in the murder, but police said it is still investigating the killing. Borongan, according to his fellow teachers, was a simple and modest man who reported to the office on his own motorcycle.
Gun attacks and killings are not uncommon in Pagadian City where hired killers are actively operating. (Mindanao Examiner)
