Sayyaf militant captured in Basilan province

BASILAN – Police commandos, backed by army soldiers, have recaptured a notorious Abu Sayyaf militant who escaped from jail in 2009 after he was tracked down in his hideout in Lamitan City in the troubled Muslim autonomous region in southern Philippines.
Security officials said Boy Indama, a follower of Abu Sayyaf leader Furuji Indama, is currently being interrogated following his capture on Thursday. His arrest was not immediately made public because of an operation aimed at capturing other militants and people that protected Indama.
It was not immediately known whether Indama was plotting a terror attack in Basilan, a known stronghold of Abu Sayyaf, whose leaders have pledged allegiance to the Islamic State.
Two of its members - Omar Askali and Mukaram Sapie - who are both bomb experts were also captured in Zamboanga City on September 23. The duo was said to be plotting to bomb civilian targets in the city, but this was foiled by security forces following their separate arrest.
Security forces seized a fragmentation grenade and two identification cards, including a cell phone from Askali, a trusted aide of Indama who is tagged by authorities as behind the spate of terror attacks and killings in Basilan. While an improvised explosive and a .45-caliber pistol were also confiscated from Sapie in Taluksangay village.
Zamboanga, which was targeted in the past by Abu Sayyaf bombers, is celebrating a Catholic feast in October. (Mindanao Examiner)

Sayyafs seize Jolo town official

SULU – Abu Sayyaf militants have seized a town official in a daring abduction in Sulu, one of 5 provinces under the troubled Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao in southern Philippines, police said Thursday.
Police said Ezzeddin Soud Tan, a municipal councillor of Jolo, was abducted Wednesday evening in the village of Timbangan in the neighboring town of Indanan. Tan was heading home when gunmen on a red jeep intercepted him.
The abductors sped off toward Talipao town and that police have launched a search for the official. It was unknown how the gunmen managed to sneak into the town without being detected by the police and military in many checkpoints in the province.
Security officials and the mayor of Indanan did not release any statement on the latest abduction. Military and police commanders have previously said that the Abu Sayyaf is now on the run following a series of offensives against the notorious group, blamed by authorities for the spate of ransom kidnappings and terrorism.
The Department of the Interior and Local Government under acting Secretary Catalino Cuy stripped 132 mayors in Sulu and other provinces in the restive region of their police powers for their alleged failure to help authorities or supressed “terrorist acts” perpetrated by the Abu Sayyaf.
But Cuy did not sack police commanders for failing Abu Sayyaf atrocities. Police and military commanders are responsible in running after the Abu Sayyaf and not local government officials. Cuy’s unitary action was met with strong protests by government officials in the Muslim autonomous region.
The supervision by local chief executives over the police was suspended by Cuy in July this year “for their failure to impose measures to suppress terroristic acts and prevent lawless violence in their territories which is inimical to national security and poses serious threat to the lives and security of their constituents.” (Mindanao Examiner)

Police said Estino was assigned in Zamboanga del Norte’s Siocon town, but had previously worked in Zamboanga City. He was in the store to buy a motorcycle when the gunmen arrived and one of them attacked the policemen with a .45-caliber pistol.
The motive of the attack is still unknown, but police said it is investigating the incident. The slain policeman was a native of Sulu, one of 5 provinces under the restive Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao. (Mindanao Examiner)

Twin blasts injure 4 people in South

COTABATO CITY – A twin bomb explosions injured four security personnel and village officials on Wednesday in Maguindanao province in the restive Muslim autonomous region in southern Philippines where security forces are battling insurgents.
The improvised explosives went off successively in Datu Odin Sinsuat town near an army training camp and wounded a policeman, a soldier and two village leaders. The bombs were planted along the road and exploded hitting the soldier who was near the area. The second explosion injured the trio investigating the blast.
No individual or group claimed responsibility for the attacks, but the troubled province is a known stronghold of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) and local ISIS militants now battling security forces in Maguindanao and in the besieged city of Marawi.
The 6th Infantry Division and the Western Mindanao Command did not release any statement on the twin blasts, but police have tightened security in the town, putting up checkpoints and deployed more patrols to prevent similar attacks in the future. Provincial and regional officials were also silent on the incident.
It was unclear how the bomber managed to sneak near the army camp and planted the explosives without being detected despite the current military rule in Mindanao. The blasts came days after an alleged BIFF bomber was captured by the army in Midsayap town in the neighboring province of North Cotabato.
Several weapons and materials in the manufacture of improvised explosives were also seized from the jihadist, whose identity was not released by the military, saying, the man is currently being interrogated.
Security forces and militants have been fighting sporadically since August in Maguindanao and troops, aided by BIFF rival group Moro Islamic Liberation Front, had recovered over two dozen improvised explosives from the clashes in the towns of Shariff Saydona Mustapha, Talayan and Datu Salibo. At least 7 soldiers were injured in the clashes since August with the military insisting it killed more than five dozen BIFF fighters, although it did not provide evidence of its claims.  (With a report from Rhoderick Beñez.)

2 Sayyaf bombers captured in Zamboanga City

ZAMBOANGA CITY – Security forces captured 2 Abu Sayyaf militants who were sent to bomb civilian targets in Zamboanga City in southern Philippines, officials announced Sunday evening.
Officials said the duo, Omar Askali and Mukaram Sapie, were captured in separate operations on Saturday in Zamboanga City. Askali was tracked down by soldiers and policemen along Governor Lim Avenue in downtown Zamboanga and Sapie in the village of aluksangay.
“Government forces thwarted Abu Sayyaf members under top leader Furuji Indama from bombing the city of Zamboanga,” said Army Captain Jo-ann Petinglay, a spokeswoman for the Western Mindanao Command.
She said security forces seized a fragmentation grenade and two identification cards, including a cell phone from Askali, a bomb-maker and a trusted aide of Indama who is tagged by authorities as behind the spate of terror attacks and killings in nearby Basilan, one of 5 provinces under the Muslim autonomous region.
An improvised explosive and a .45-caliber pistol were also confiscated from Sapie in Taluksangay, Petinglay said, adding, soldiers were still searching for a second bomb in the village. “The area is still being searched for another IED since information from Askali revealed that Mukram was keeping two improvised explosive devices,” she said.
Army Colonel Leonel Nicolas, commander of an anti-terror task force in Zamboanga city, said: “Intelligence reports revealed that the group will bomb public places in the city three days from now. This prompted our troops to conduct a joint operation with the police to capture the bandits and preempt their bomb ploy.”
Zamboanga, which was targeted in the past by Abu Sayyaf bombers, is celebrating an annual Catholic feast in October. (Mindanao Examiner)

ISIS fighters send surrender feelers

MARAWI CITY – The Philippine military said it is getting surrender feelers from local ISIS militants as fighting continues Sunday in the war-ravaged city of Marawi where security forces were trying to dislodged heavily-armed militants from their strongholds.
Army Colonel Romeo Brawner Jr. said they were expecting more to surrender peacefully as troops advance in the city’s center where most of the militants are hiding among heavily-fortified structures and mosques. He did not say how many intend to surrender.
While fighting rages on, military propagandists, armed with loud speakers, continue also their “psychological operation” aimed at convincing militants to abandon their struggle and surrender peacefully. It was not immediately known whether those who wanted to yield were hard core members or civilians forced to fight.
The military also insisted that nearly 700 militants had died since fighting began on May 23, but most of this figure was based on intelligence report and not body counts, although over 150 soldiers perished in the battle with over 2,000 troops wounded in the clashes. At least 45 civilians also died in the senseless war.
ISIS fighters occupied Marawi in a failed bid to make it a province of the Islamic State in the troubled Muslim autonomous region. (Mindanao Examiner)
