THE LAND Transportation Office (LTO) on Thursday warned of “unscrupulous” individuals who offer application or renewal of driver’s license through social media.
The warning came after the agency received verified reports of fraudulent transactions such as the services offered were not authorized by the agency and “patently illegal”.
“The agency is now investigating the matter to identify these unscrupulous individuals, and those who have knowingly patronized their services, to institute appropriate criminal, civil, and administrative charges against them,” the LTO said in a statement.
For the duration of the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) due to the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic, it said that applications and/or renewal of drivers' licenses, other permits, and registration of motor vehicles are temporarily suspended until the resumption of work in the agency is authorized.
“Hence, all drivers' licenses, permits, and registration of motor vehicles which shall expire during the ECQ period shall remain valid,” the LTO said.
In a Facebook post on Wednesday, the LTO said it has extended the validity of drivers' licenses that expire during the ECQ to 60 days from the day it is lifted.
Aside from the extension of expired driver’s license, the LTO said no penalties would be imposed for the late registration of motor vehicles and renewal of driver’s license that expire during the ECQ.
Once the ECQ is lifted, transactions in LTO offices will be limited, as it observes physical distancing.
The agency said it expects the number of daily transactions in its offices to be reduced as it will reduce its personnel in counters.
To help address the possible backlog of transactions, it said LTO offices may remain open on Saturdays, as well as the possibility of giving priority to front-line workers.
