Police clash with gunmen in Zambo

ZAMBOANGA CITY – Two motorcycle gunmen who attacked a group of policemen before dawn Thursday were captured following a chase in a village in Zamboanga City in southern Philippines, a police spokeswoman said.

Maj. Shellamie Chang said the pair – Mohammad Hassan Sapie, 40; and Al-jiden Dadjilul Usama, 30; traded gunfire with cops and were wounded in the shootout. A third suspect managed to escape and is being hunted by the police, she added.

She said no policemen were wounded in the gun battle and the duo is currently being investigated.

“Investigation revealed that prior to the incident, SDET (Station Drug Enforcement Team) members of Police Station 6 were conducting an initial briefing in relation to their on-going campaign against illegal drugs within a vacant lot when a group of motorcycle

riders passed by and one of them was seen brandishing his firearm tucked in his left waist, immediately SDET personnel followed the said riders,” Chang said.

“However, suspect Mohammad Hassan Sapie, without any provocation, opened fire towards the SDET team, thus the team retaliated. As a result, the suspects sustained gunshot wounds on the different parts of their bodies and tried to escape,” she added.

Chang said policemen recovered two .45-caliber pistols from the pair, including their motorcycle.

She said regional police chief, Brig. Gen. Neil AlinsaƱgan commended the cops for the capture of the gunmen. ““In instances and incidents wherein fast response is a necessity, every second counts. The quick and prompt response of our PNP personnel in this specific incident deserves acclamation,” Chang quoted AlinsaƱgan as saying.

No other details were immediately available on the background of the suspects. (Mindanao Examiner)
