BASILAN - Government forces raided an Abu Sayyaf safe house and recovered two improvised explosives in Basilan province in the restive Muslim autonomous region.
Officials have confirmed the find and said members of the Joint Task Force Basilan recovered the improvised explosives in the village called Seronggon in Hadji Mohammad Ajul town on Tuesday.
Brig. Gen. Domingo Gobway, the task force commander, said troops recovered the following two rounds of rocket-propelled grenade, high explosives, one round of 40mm high explosive grenade launcher, four non-electric blasting caps, commercial detonating cord and a commercial time fuse.
He said the 39th Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team immediately proceeded to the location for the safe extraction of the recovered item and other IED components as troops continued to scour the area.
“A reliable source relayed that the IED components were fabricated in an abandoned house at Sitio Marang-Marang, Tuburan Proper, Hadji Mohammad Ajul by a certain Tawakal Bayali, a.k.a. Jaber, and his companion, a.k.a. Mudzfal, who are members of the Abu Sayyaf group under sub-leader Pasil Bayali, a.k.a. Kerah,” Gobway said.
Lt. Gen. Alfredo Rosario Jr., chief of the Western Mindanao Command, said a tip-off from a civilian led to the discovery of the explosives. He said there was no report of any arrest.
Rosario lauded the civilian and the troops for the recovery of the explosives. “I also attribute this accomplishment to the concerned citizen, who relayed the information to our troops. I, therefore, urge everyone to remain vigilant and cooperative. Let us continue to do our share in preventing our heartless enemies from executing their terroristic activities,” he said.
