From classroom to community: Empowering the young minds through local governance
SENIOR HIGH school spans over two academic years, specifically grades 11 and 12, with each year consisting of two semesters. Within each semester, there are a total of 29 compulsory subjects and 2 elective subjects, each requiring 80 hours of completion. However, it is worth noting that Physical Education (PE) and Health courses only demand 20 hours each.
This comprehensive program aims to provide students with a well-rounded education, encompassing a wide range of subjects to foster their intellectual growth and personal development. By offering a diverse selection of mandatory and elective courses, students have the opportunity to tailor their education to their individual interests and aspirations.
In addition to the mandatory subjects, students have the freedom to choose two elective courses from a broad spectrum of options. This allows them to explore areas of personal interest or potential career paths, nurturing their passions and expanding their knowledge beyond the core curriculum.
I humbly suggest that RA 7160, also known as the Local Government Code of 1991, and RA 10742, commonly referred to as the Sangguniang Kabataan Reform Act of 2015, should be incorporated into the high school curriculum as elective subjects. These two acts hold immense significance in shaping the future of our nation, as they pertain to local governance and the empowerment of the youth. By introducing these subjects at the high school level, we can equip our students with a comprehensive understanding of their rights, responsibilities, and active participation in local government affairs.
The Local Government Code of 1991 serves as the backbone of our local governance system, outlining the powers and functions of local government units. By studying this code, students will gain insights into the intricate workings of local government, including the roles of mayors, councilors, and barangay officials. This knowledge will foster a sense of civic duty and encourage students to actively engage in their communities, ultimately contributing to the development and progress of our nation.
Similarly, the Sangguniang Kabataan Reform Act of 2015 focuses on the youth sector's involvement in local governance. This act aims to empower young individuals by providing them with a platform to voice their concerns, propose initiatives, and actively participate in decision-making processes. By studying this act, students will develop a deep understanding of their rights as young citizens and the avenues available to them for effecting positive change in their communities.
Introducing these acts as elective subjects in high school will not only enhance students' knowledge of local governance but also instill in them a sense of responsibility and active citizenship. By equipping our youth with the necessary tools and knowledge, we are nurturing a generation of informed and engaged individuals who will shape the future of our nation.
Indeed, the inclusion of RA 7160 and RA 10742 as elective subjects in high school will provide students with a solid foundation in local governance and youth empowerment. (RT)
