Philippines tightens security in restive South

COTABATO CITY –Philippine authorities have tightened up security in the restive southern region of Mindanao following recent rebel attacks that killed at least 9 people in two provinces.

The army said those killed in the attacks were civilians, mostly farmers in Sultan Kudarat province, and Maguindanao, which is already part of the troubled Muslim autonomous region.

Members of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters launched simultaneous raids that surprised civilians in those areas.

They also attacked a military post in Datu Abdullah Sangki in Maguindanao, but three of the raiders were also slain in subsequent clash with government soldiers from the 33rd Infantry Battalion.

The BIFF has threatened to launch more attacks on non-Muslim targets and the military and police as part of its campaign to put up a strict Islamic state in Mindanao, once ruled by sultans until Christians settlers arrived and eventually drove the natives out of their ancestral domain.(With reports from Ely Dumaboc and Rose Muneza)
