Philippine troops repulse rebel attacks

COTABATO CITY – Philippine soldiers repulsed a series of attacks by jihadists in Maguindanao province in the troubled Muslim autonomous region in Mindanao, officials said Friday.
Officials said troops manning three army posts in the towns of Datu Piang, Shariff Saydona and Shariff Aguak clashed with Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) late on Thursday. There were no reports of casualties, but the assaults on the military posts showed the capability of the rebel group to launch attacks despite tight security in the province.
Capt. Jo-ann Petinglay, a spokeswoman for the 6th Infantry Division, said rebels fired M203 grenades on the army detachments and sparking a firefight between the two groups.
“The already prepared military forces immediately engaged the harassing lawless elements for an estimated fifteen minutes, prompting the BIFF to withdraw and scamper towards different directions,” she said.
The BIFF is fighting for a separate Islamic state in southern Philippines. (Mindanao Examiner)
