Ilocos Sur student receives scholarship grant from Carmudi PH

Kristine Ian De Guzman

BRITISH Novelist and well-known author C.S. Lewis once said, “You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream.” This is what Kristine Ian De Guzman, a single mother and graduating student at Ilocos Sur Polytechnic State College, believes in life as she pursues her dreams despite of financial difficulties.
De Guzman, a senior student taking up a degree in Information System Major in Interactive Technology, shares her encouraging story on how she is currently fulfilling her dreams. “We lost our father 25 years ago. From that moment, we already knew that we can’t finish our studies anymore. Money at home was very tight and we don’t have an option but to embrace the reality.”
“After taking BS Nursing in 2005, I stopped my studies abruptly and focused instead on getting a job. When I gave birth to my son, I knew there will be no chance for me to finish my studies,” explained De Guzman.
But her son who serves as her biggest inspiration gave her hope to fulfill her dreams. Despite her personal and financial struggles, De Guzman took and applied for Career Service Examination Professional Level, which is prerequisite qualification for anyone who wants to get a job in the government.
“When I passed the CSE, I realized there’s still hope for me,” adds De Guzman, as she continued to narrate how she slowly strove to hunt for her elusive dream.
Without any money in hand, De Guzman mustered the courage to enroll, even as an irregular student. “After one semester, I decided to apply for a scholarship program granted by CHED. For two and a half years, I was able to work hard to get high grades and maintain my scholarship. I thank God for getting consistent grades and being a replacement scholar for 5 semesters,” shares De Guzman.
“I am so blessed this year. After finishing my scholarship with CHED, Carmudi Philippines granted me a new scholarship program that will enable me to fulfil my dreams,” said De Guzman.
The 27-year-old De Guzman was chosen by online car platform Carmudi as its recipient scholar for her outstanding grades and attitude towards her circumstances. The scholarship program aims to help senior students who are academically excellent but financially challenged.
“In line with our commitment towards being a responsible corporate citizen, it is our honor to support excellence in academe and provide the economic means for gifted students to move ahead on their educational path. We wish our scholars all the best in their future endeavors,” said Abhi Mohan, Managing Director of Carmudi Philippines.
Carmudi Philippines—through its website www.carmudi.com.ph—has been generating positive leads for potential car buyers and sellers in the country since it started January 2014. The website currently has close to 32,000 vehicles in its inventory spanning cars, motorcycles and commercial vehicles; brand new or used. The online car platform was originally founded in Berlin, Germany in 2013 under the Rocket Internet Group.

Duterte, Robredo proclaimed; ARMM congratulates duo for winning presidency, vice presidency

MANILA – Congress on Monday proclaimed Rodrigo Duterte as the new president of the Philippines and Leni Robredo as vice president following their victory in the May 9 elections.
The 71-year old Duterte did not attend the proclamation and instead met with supporters and allies in Davao City where he served as its long time mayor.
The former lawyer and prosecutor said he would hold office in Davao and would start working at 1 p.m. until 12 midnight.
The two officials will officially hold office on June 30.
In southern Philippines, Mujiv Hataman, the governor of the Muslim autonomous region, who campaigned for Duterte’s closest rival Mar Roxas and his running mate Robredo, congratulated the duo.
“Today, we turn another page in our history as we welcome those who will be at the forefront in leading our country for the next six years. We would like to extend our sincerest congratulations to our President-elect, Rodrigo Duterte, and our Vice President-Elect, Leni Robredo. Both of them have proven their mettle in empowering the oppressed and marginalized sectors of society, and both of them have made it a priority to empower the people in their years of public service,” Hataman, a member of the Liberal Party, said.
He said Duterte and Robredo have won the trust of the Bangsamoro people and with a solid track record as local officials, both of them represent an administration that will find its strength in participatory governance and empowered local government units.
Hataman said: “Their win, therefore, bears greater significance when placed beside our collective effort towards a national government where regions like the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) can expect their peoples' voices to be heard and where the concerns of those in the regions are part and parcel of the national agenda.”

“Here in the ARMM, we have done much in more than seventeen years of working together towards peace, and the next six years bring much promise. Upon taking the helm of the national government, we hope that the commitment of both our president-elect and vice president-elect have expressed during the campaign with regard to the peace process will bear fruit. May their leadership translate to further acknowledging the historical injustices committed against the people of Mindanao, to empowering those whose histories are yet to find a place in the national narrative, and to recognizing the rights of the people, including the right to self-determination,” he added.
Hataman, who was also re-elected, said: “We share in their victory, and we find hope in the leadership that President-elect Duterte and Vice President-elect Robredo will bring to the table. Together, we look forward to bringing this country closer to a future where lasting peace and genuine justice for all is not just an aspiration but a way of life.” (Mindanao Examiner)

DepEd-ARMM kicks off 'Brigada Eskwela'

COTABATO CITY - Education Sec. Dr. John Magno of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) led Monday a series of cleanup activities in different public elementary and high schools in the coastal areas of Datu Odin Sinsuat town in Maguindanao province to mark the start of the annual week-long school maintenance activity dubbed 'Brigada Eskwela’.

Magno said that aside from the cleanup drive, this year’s ‘Brigada Eskwela’ will also give emphasis on school disaster-preparedness and readiness for the implementation of the K to 12 program.

He said they want to make sure that schools in the ARMM are safe and conducive to education.

The 2016 ‘Brigada Eskwela’ or National Schools Maintenance Week carries the theme "Tayo Para sa Paaralang Ligtas, Maayos, at Handa Mula Kindegarten Hanggang Senior High School" (All of us for safe and proper schools, and ready from Kindergarten to Senior High School) and aims to unite communities in ensuring a better future for Filipino children.

Magno said the region’s education officials and teachers are working with parents, barangay officials, students and other volunteers to clean and prepare schools in time for the opening of classes on June 13.

"We are happy and grateful for the annual ‘Brigada Eswela’ and the support that we get from the DepEd-ARMM," said Tukan Mangulamas, a supply officer at the second schools division of Maguindanao.

The Australian Government-funded BEAM (Basic Education Assistance for Mindanao)-ARMM program has earmarked P8.9 million this year for minor repairs of classrooms in 225 public elementary and high schools as well as the provision of chairs and tables to 53 madaris (Islamic school).

The BEAM-ARMM will also provide curriculum guide, teacher's guide and learning materials.

“The DepEd-ARMM and BEAM have helped us improve our schools and encourage children to attend classes," Evelyn Kanain, Senior High Coordinator of the Schools Division of Sulu.

Kanain said the assistance from BEAM-ARMM will improve the quality of education in various schools not only in Sulu but in the entire region as well.

Disaster preparedness activities will be integrated in the education program of public schools to better prepare students in the events of typhoons, floods and other natural calamities.

Brigada Eskwela was started in 2003 and has three main objectives such as to practice shared governance; to bring the spirit of education to the community level and to utilize local resources to public schools. (Bureau of Public Information)

(Mohd Saaduddin)

Basilan bombing foiled

ZAMBOANGA CITY – Police foiled a bombing attempt on Saturday in the restive province of Basilan in the Muslim autonomous region.
Police said it defused an improvised explosive assembled from a mortar round connected to a blasting cap and cell phone on a bridge in Lamitan City.
The explosive was in a black backpack when police bomb experts carefully disarmed it. The bridge was temporarily closed while policemen searched the area for more bombs, but found nothing.
No individual or group claimed responsibility for the foiled attack, but Lamitan had been previously bombed by the Abu Sayyaf.
Basilan is a major stronghold of the rebel group in southern Philippines. (Mindanao Examiner)

COTABATO CITY – At least 2 people were injured when a rifle grenade was fired early Saturday into the compound of the once powerful Ampatuan political clan in Maguindanao province in the volatile Muslim autonomous region in southern Philippines.
Police confirmed the attack at the sprawling compound of the Ampatuan mansion in Shariff Aguak town. It was unknown why the police and military failed to prevent the assault despite the presence of security forces in the town.
The mansion was owned by former Maguindanao governor Andal Ampatuan Sr, the clan’s patriarch who was a staunched political rival of Esmael Mangudadatu, the current governor.
Ampatuan - accused as behind the murder of dozens of people, including Mangudadatu’s wife and sister, and journalists in 2009 in Maguindanao, died in July 2015 from kidney failure.
Despite being imprisoned, many villagers in Maguindanao remain loyal to Ampatuan and his clan.
No individual or group claimed responsibility for the attack and police said it is still investigating the blast. (Mindanao Examiner)

Clashes continue in Southern Philippines

MARAWI CITY – Sporadic clashes between security forces and jihadists continue in Lanao del Sur, one of 5 provinces under the troubled Muslim autonomous region in southern Philippines.
Various sources said at least 2 jihadists were killed in the clashes which erupted last week, but still continuing in the town of Butig where military forces were trying to flush out the group of Abdullah Maute which is fighting for Islamic caliphate in the volatile region.
Maute, leader of the so-called Islamic State Ranao, is said to be coddling Indonesian and Malaysian militants in the province.
Military propaganda claimed that more than 20 jihadists were killed in the battle, but troops had not recovered the bodies of those slain in the fighting. The reports cited raw intelligence from villagers.
It was unknown if there were government soldiers killed in the gun battle, but ground troops were being supported by artillery fire and aerial bombardments by aging OV-10 aircrafts from the air force.
The governor of Lanao del Sur, Bombit Adiong, has not issued any statement on the fighting, but the regional government has began relief operations in many villages where civilians had evacuated for fear of being caught in the crossfire or mistaken for members or supporters of the jihadist group.
Just this year, jihadists beheaded two brothers - Salvador and Makol Hanobas – who were accused by Maute’s group as government spies. There were among 6 sawmill operators seized by gunmen on April in the province. The others - Julieto Hanobas, Alfredo Anoos, Gabriel Permites and Adones Mendez - were freed unharmed following negotiations by their Muslim employer.
Members of the jihadist group Ansarul Khilafah also captured and decapitated another man in Sarangani province after being accused as a police spy. (With a report from Mohd Saaduddin)

(Mindanao Examiner)
