Bomb explodes outside Catholic Church in Philippines

SULTAN KUDARAT – An improvise explosive went off outside a Catholic church on Sunday and wounding at least 2 persons, police said.
It said the blast occurred outside the Our Lady of Hope church in Esperanza town. No individual or group claimed responsibility for the attack that wounded John Escanilla, 30, and Loren Erazo, 26.
The blast coincided with ongoing clashes between jihadists and military forces in Butig town in Lanao del Sur province in the restive Muslim autonomous region.
At least 2 soldiers had been wounded in the clashes which started on November 26 when some 200 jihadists under Abdullah Maute occupied the town and raised ISIS flags. Military forces were trying to liberate the town and dispatched a small fleet of aging air force planes to support ground troops.
The Maute group has pledged allegiance to the Islamic State and forged alliance with others jihadist groups in the region. (Moh Saaduddin)
