NPA rebel killed Pagadian City, 2 others surrender to military

PAGADIAN CITY – A communist rebel was killed in a clash with government troops in Pagadian City in Zamboanga del Sur province.
Two other rebels surrendered also in Sindangan town in the neighboring province of Zamboanga del Norte, according to Lt. Col. Jo-Ar Herrera, a spokesman for the 1st  Infantry Division.
He said the slain New People’s Army rebel was identified as Diego Becsala, whose group clashed with members of the 53rd Infantry Battalion in Lisson Valley on Wednesday. Troops recovered from Becsala a hand grenade and a flag of the rebel group.
But a separate police report said soldiers captured a rebel who was wounded in the fighting in Lisson Valley. It said the soldiers, led by 1st Lt. Roderick Alcantara, clashed with at least 15 rebels. Police did not identify the captured rebel.
Two NPA members, Christopher Saplid and Joliber Candao, surrendered to the 44th Infantry Battalion on a village in Sindangan where soldiers were interrogating them. The rebels have been fighting for many decades now in an effort to overthrow the democratic government and establish a communist state in the country. (Mindanao Examiner)
