Troops recover body of slain rebel in Agusan province

DAVAO CITY – Government soldiers recovered the decomposing body of communist rebel slain in fighting in recent in Agusan del Sur province in southern Philippines, officials said Thursday.

1st Lieutenant Tere Ingente, an army spokesman, said troops from the 75th Infantry Battalion also found an Ak-47 assault rifle, magazines and ammunition near the cadaver which remains unidentified.

He said villagers discovered the body and the weapon in the town of Bunawan and reported it to the army. Ingente said the cadaver would be given a proper burial.

The rebel was believed killed in a clash with soldiers on February 18 and the body left behind by fleeing New People’s Army fighters.

The body also showed signs that it was devoured by wild animals after soldiers found human carcass in the area. This was also confirmed by Colonel Andres Centino, commander of the 401st Infantry Brigade in Agusan del Sur, a known rebel stronghold in the region.

No one has claimed the body, Centino said, adding, soldiers are still continuing their operations against the NPA in the province, although there were no reports of fresh clashes so far.

The rebels have been fighting for many decades now for the establishment of a separate Maoist government in the country. (Mindanao Examiner)
