ZAMBOANGA CITY – Two people were killed and at least 3 dozen more were injured after an overloaded jeep overturned Saturday on a village in Zamboanga City in southern Philippines.
The speeding jeep was travelling in the village of Lanzones when the driver lost control of the wheel. One passenger, Hamir dela Cruz, 30, was killed on the spot while the second victim, Elvis delos Reyes, died in the hospital.
The jeep had passengers on its roof and rear, according to some of the victims.
The passengers, including the driver, who was initially identified as Tindug, suffered fractures from the mishap. Police said it is investigating the crash.
Traffic policemen and enforcers have ignored many traffic violations by reckless jeep drivers who take passengers more than the capacity of their vehicles. There had been deadly crashes of overloaded jeeps and passenger vans over the past decade. (Mindanao Examiner)
