DAVAO CITY – Two communist rebels
have surrendered to the military in the southern Philippines where troops are
battling insurgents in the restive region, officials said Friday.
Officials said the rebels, who are members of the New People’s Army (NPA), also yielded two AK-47 assault rifles to the 27th Infantry Battalion in the village of Ned in Lake Sebu on Thursday afternoon.
During interrogation, the rebels said they abandoned their unit and decided to surrender peacefully, according to Lt. Col. Ezra Balagtey, a spokesman for the Eastern Mindanao Command.
The town has declared NPA rebels as “persona non grata” and villagers, led by their municipal leaders, have been supporting government efforts in maintaining peace and order in there.
Lt. Gen. Felimon Santos Jr., the regional military commander, has urged rebels to surrender peacefully. “We mean business and serious to eliminate the armed threat. We will use all available assets at our disposal to run after those who continue to espouse armed struggle. Surrender before it is too late,” he said.
The NPA has been fighting for many decades now in an effort to up its own communist state in the country. (Mindanao Examiner)
