CEBU CITY – Mayor Edgardo Labella has ordered an investigation into reports that unscrupulous persons were collecting money from vendors in downtown Cebu in exchange for permission to sell at the market.
Labella said the vendors reported the matter after the local government allowed them to sell their merchandises at the night market, especially along Colon Street, until January – from Monday to Friday.
The vendors had been previously displaced by the road clearing operations supervised by the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG).
The mayor warned vendors not to pay to anyone following reports that some persons were collecting as much as P15,000 for the use of the market space.
“That is what we are avoiding. I don’t know if there’s truth in these reports, but it needs to be investigated,” Labella said, adding, Market Administrator Jonil Matugina and City Administrator Jun Casas, together with Barangay chairmen from Pari-an, Ermita, Sto. NiƱo, and Kalubihan are now looking into the reports. (John Rey Saavedra)
