50% of cops with Covid-19 already recovered

THE NUMBER  of police officers infected with the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) has reached 346 but more than half of them have already recovered, a Philippine National Police (PNP) official said on Wednesday.

In his report to PNP chief, Gen. Archie Gamboa, Health Service Director, Brig. Gen. Herminio Tadeo Jr. said the PNP's current recovery rate is 50.86 percent as 176 personnel have recovered out of the total number of Covid-19 confirmed cases as of Wednesday.
A total of 20 new confirmed cases among the cops were recorded while the death toll stands at four.
“We attribute this high recovery rate to our intensified mass testing among our police personnel including extensive contact tracing and treatment of confirmed cases as well as isolation of suspected cases,” he said.
Of this number, 148 patients are in quarantine facilities, two are admitted in hospitals, and 16 are undergoing home quarantine.
It is also monitoring 675 probable cases and 717 suspect cases.
A total of 2,144 personnel have completed self/home quarantine under strict medical observation.
Last week, Gamboa said more than 60 percent of the infected cops are from the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) and are deployed in checkpoint duties.
As a response, Gamboa said the PNP assured extensive testing mechanisms and improved protection of the policemen manning the checkpoints.
He added that the PNP is also planning to establish testing centers in Visayas and Mindanao regional police offices.
Last week, the PNP officially opened its Covid-19 testing center in Camp Crame after getting accreditation from the Department of Health.
Gamboa said the move to come with up a fully operational testing center aims to fast-track the results of each test of police personnel.
