THE DEPARTMENT of Trade and Industry warned online sellers who have been selling overpriced goods amid the ongoing crisis.
"We are warning all unscrupulous individuals who plan or who have been doing this na hindi porke't naka-crisis tayo o naka-work from home eh hindi na po nagbabantay ang DTI," Trade Undersecretary Ruth Castelo said in Laging Handa public briefing on Tuesday.
She said online sellers should follow the government's suggested retail price for basic goods, especially now that the COVID pandemic shifted more Filipinos to e-commerce.
"Those sold online should also comply with the SRP bulletin. Wala po tayong distinction nung application nito whether it is sold physically, in a physical store, or online," Castelo said.
She said there are 2,000 DTI workers tasked to monitor prices of goods sold over the internet to ensure that the public are not being victimized by profiteering and overpricing online sellers.
She also explained that the DTI has sought the help of the National Bureau of Investigation, and the Philippine National Police – Criminal Investigation Group to go after illegal trading activities online and many have been arrested already due to overpricing, profiteering, or because of the poor quality of their products.
"Marami na pong nahuhuli on the overpricing, profiteering or quality po ng kanilang produkto," she said.
Castelo also reminded the public not to resort to panic buying and hoarding because there is a steady supply of goods and the DTI is now studying if the imposed purchase limit on basic commodities can be lifted already.
