Bogus lawyer in face shield scam nabbed in Taguig

A FAKE   lawyer allegedly engaged in face shield sale scam was arrested in Taguig City, the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) said on Wednesday.

In a media release, the CIDG said the suspect Juan Antonio Evangelista, 47, was nabbed in an entrapment on the 29th floor of the World Plaza commercial building at the Bonifacio Global City on Tuesday.
The operation stemmed from the complaint of victims Reinchild Salting and Carina Lim, who said the suspect introduced himself as a lawyer and an authorized agent of SkyPhil Corporation engaged in selling of face shields with plenty of stocks allegedly kept at their warehouse in Paco, Manila.
Last August 22, Evangelista promised the complainants that he will deliver around 22,000 pieces of face shields after receiving a total payment of PHP900,000 from them. He also promised to deliver another 50,000 pieces of face shields for their second order.
Evangelista's failure to deliver the face shields prompted the complainants to proceed to the alleged warehouse where they were informed by a certain Eline Rafin that there were neither stocks of face shield kept in their place nor they are in any way connected to the suspect.
On Monday, the complainants contacted Evangelista who said his delivery truck and his cellular phone had a problem that was why he was not able to deliver the face shields.
He informed the complainants that they cannot refund their money and they can only have their face shields if they pay for their second order amounting to PHP2 million.
The CIDG's Anti Transnational Crime Unit (ATCU) immediately planned and executed the entrapment operation which resulted in the immediate arrest of Evangelista.
Confiscated from Evangelista’s possession and control were a bag containing PHP1,000 bills as boodle money.
He also surrendered an Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) ID as well as other government-issued IDs.
Upon verification with the IBP, it was revealed that the suspect is not a lawyer and the IBP Lifetime Number that appears in his ID belongs to another lawyer.
The suspect will be facing charges for violation of Article 315 (2) (a) (Estafa) and Article 172 (Falsification of Public Documents) of the RPC.
The CIDG urged the public those who fell victim to Evangelista that they may visit the CIDG ATCU Office in Camp Crame or contact them at telephone number 723-0401 local 5232 should they wish to file additional charges against the suspect.
