ECHOING THE statement of President Rodrigo Duterte, House Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano said on Monday the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) is the enemy, not the government.
“The leadership and members of the House of the People agree with the President that Covid-19 is the enemy, not the Government,” Cayetano said in a Facebook post.
He said Congress is committed to pass the Bayanihan to Recover as One bill or Bayanihan 2, as well as other pertinent measures to help the country recover from the pandemic’s effects.
“The entire government must, and will, act quickly to address the public health and economic crisis that threatens the lives and livelihood of our kababayans,” he said. “Congress, for its part, commits to the swift passage of the Bayanihan to Recover as One act, and to consider all that the President has said is needed for the Philippines to get back on its feet.”
Cayetano urged the public to stand united and work together in defeating the virus.
“While there are still many more that can and should be done to help the country get through this most difficult period -- those fomenting disunity at this time are doing the nation a great disservice by distracting us from the real battle,” he said.
He noted that the chamber is also working closely with several members of the medical field and other front-liners in crafting the proposed law, which contains a stimulus package for the country’s recovery from the impact of Covid-19.
“No one has a monopoly of good ideas and solutions, and anyone who pretends otherwise is either a liar or a fool. If we want to beat the virus, it is incumbent upon all of us to keep an open mind and not let partisan politics get in the way of doing the right thing,” he said.
On Sunday, the Department of Health reported 5,032 new Covid-19 infections, raising the overall tally to 103,185. Meanwhile, the number of recoveries stands at 65,557 and the death toll is 2,059. (By Filane Mikee Cervantes)
