THE QUEZON City government has partnered with the Department of Agriculture (DA) to promote food production in cities and encourage its residents to become more active in agriculture.
QC Mayor Joy Belmonte and DA Secretary William Dar on Wednesday signed a memorandum of agreement that will push for the use of the aquaponics technology.
“Layunin nito mabigyang kakayahan ang ating mga residente na magpalaki ng isda tulad ng tilapia at hito sa abot-kayang paraan (this aims to equip our residents to breed and grow different species of fish like tilapia and catfish in an affordable way),” Belmonte said.
She said aquaponics technology can be used as a source of alternative food production that will help increase fish and vegetable supplies.
“Gumagamit ng ‘nutrient-rich’ na tubig ito mula sa ‘fish unit’ at pagkatapos ay maaaring gamitin bilang fertilizer sa mga pananim, kung kaya'y matipid at environmentally-friendly ang prosesong ito (the water from the fish unit is ‘nutrient-rich’ and is used to fertilize plants. This process is inexpensive and environment-friendly at the same time),” the post states.
Representatives from the QC Food Security Task Force as well as from the DA-Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources-National Capital Region attended the MOA signing.
Some residents from Barangay Bagong Silangan present at the event were the first beneficiaries of the program. (By Marita Moaje)
