CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY - Enabling farmers to increase productivity and profitability, the Department of Agriculture and the City Government of Cagayan de Oro led the groundbreaking ceremony of a P20-million cold storage and packing facility here.
“The construction of this dome-type storage and packing facility is one of a kind in the region that requires advanced engineering or construction technology. This facility will extend the shelf life of highly-perishable commodities and reduce post-harvest losses of the farmers in Cagayan de Oro City and northern Mindanao as a whole,” said DA Regional Executive Director Carlene Collado.
The construction of the 350 ton capacity facility in Kauswagan is funded through the Bayanihan to Recover as One Act (Bayanihan 2) under High Value Crops Development Program.
“We are honored and certainly we will take care of it. Alam namin na malaking tulong ito (We know that this is a big help) not just in Cagayan de Oro but also in the whole of northern Mindanao,” Mayor Oscar Moreno said.
Moreno urged the beneficiaries to take care of the facility emphasizing that stimulus projects should produce results and “it's a one-way street kung hindi makapag-produce and the government may not have funds anymore to suffice the needs of the farmers.”
The storage will have 2 loading docks, a pre-cooling room with areas for washing and rinsing, sorting, palletizing and office with a total area of 500 square meters. (Recthie Paculba)
