ZAMBOANGA MAYOR Beng Climaco lauded the Philippine Navy for intercepting two motorboats loaded with smuggled cigarettes worth P17.5 million during a recent operation here.

“Muchisimas gracias Naval Forces Western Mindanao for your commitment and dedication in the fight against smuggling in support of President Duterte’s war versus all forms of illegal activities as well as our administration's flagship program on security, health and education,” she said.

The Naval Forces Western Mindanao said the boats - MB Nurshida and MB Dreamboy – originated from Sulu province and were intercepted recently off Ayala and Sinunuc villages. 

It said the MB Nurshida, manned by 7 crewmen, was loaded with 228 cases of Cannon cigarettes worth about P7.9 million when it was stopped by patrol boats near the shoreline of Ayala village.

While the MB Dreamboy was carrying 274 cases of assorted cigarette brands worth about P9.6 million. The boat had a crew of 5 men.

“Both watercrafts are believed to have originated from Sulu. The watercrafts were escorted to the Naval Station Romulo Espaldon for a joint inspection and inventory. In all, the two seized vessels were carrying a total of 502 cases of assorted cigarettes worth P17.5 million,” the Navy said.

The Navy did not disclose the names of the owners of the boats or its crew, and the contraband. (Zamboanga Post)
