THE PHILIPPINES signed a P28-billion contract with South Korean shipbuilder Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) for two brand-new corvettes capable of anti-ship, anti-submarine and anti-air warfare missions.
Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana and HHI representative Ka Sam Hyun
signed the deal and was witnessed by Minister Kang Eun-ho, head of South
Korea's Defense Acquisition Program Administration, and HHI president and chief
executive officer Chung Ki-Sun, and Armed Forces of the Philippines Gen. Andres
Centino and Navy Vice Admiral Adeluis Bordado.
“This project will give the Philippine Navy two modern corvettes that
are capable of anti-ship, anti-submarine, and anti-air warfare missions,” Lorenzana
said, adding, the two ships will also serve as backstops for two naval frigates.
“With a common shipbuilder for all our naval platforms, we expect ease
of maintenance and repairs,” he said, commending the shipbuilder for being an
active and reliable partner in the navy’s modernization program.
The Special Allotment Release Order (SARO) for the 15% advance payment
for the Corvette Acquisition Program was released by the Department of Budget
and Management on December 10. (Priam Nepomuceno and Mindanao Examiner)
