DAVAO CITY – The government has put up a P5.6 million bounty on the head of a top communist rebel leader Menandro Villanueva who escaped a military operation that killed a senior commander in Davao de Oro province in southern Philippines.
The reward for Villanueva’s capture was offered by
the Department of National Defense and Department of the Interior and Local
Government, according to Maj. Gen. Ernesto Torres Jr., commander of the 10th
Infantry Division.
He said Villanueva, alias Bok, is the Secretary of
the Southern Mindanao Regional Committee (SMRC) of the Community Party of the
Philippines (CPP) and is wanted by the police and military for various crimes.
“Any information that will lead to the arrest of
alias Bok has a reward set up by DND and DILG amounting to P5.6 million. We
know he is still there in the operational area,” Torres said, referring to Davao
de Oro where soldiers recently killed Anna Sandra Reyes, a CPP’s Central
Committee member and Secretary of the Regional White Area Committee which is
under SMRC.
The CPP has not issued any statement on the
government bounty and the slaying of Reyes.
President Rodrigo Duterte has ordered the military
to finish off the CPP leaders and their members, including the New People’s
Army forces if they would not surrender peacefully.
The CPP and its armed wing NPA have been fighting for many decades now for the establishment of a communist state in the country. (Mindanao Examiner)
