ZAMBOANGA CITY – A suspected drug pusher was killed and a policeman wounded following a gunfight during an undercover bust in this southern Philippine port city, officials said Saturday.
Officials said two other gunmen escaped by boat during the firefight which occurred late Friday in the coastal village of Sinunuc where undercover cops tried to close a drug deal with the gang.
One of the dealers, Puruti Taraji, was killed in the shootout, said Col. Alexander Lorenzo, chief of the local police force, adding the wounded cop was rushed to hospital, although his condition and name were not disclosed by the official.
"Suspect, Puriti J. Taraji, alias Bossing, was a big-time drug pusher in (island-town of) Pata in Sulu and transporter of illegal drugs to Regions 9 (Western Mindanao) and 10 (Northern Mindanao) was the subject of the buy-bust operations conducted at around 11: 00 p.m. of Friday during the Law enforcement operation in the (village) of Sinunuc," he said.
Lorenzo said those involved in the drug bust were able to recover around four kilos of crystal meth worth over P27 million, a 9mm pistol and the drug money used in the sting. He said the slain drug dealer was a native of Sulu and listed as a high-value target by the police.
