ZAMBOANGA CITY – Police forces killed one of the most wanted criminals in the southern Philippine province of Sulu following a gunfight in Patikul town, officials said.
Officials said Benhar Biting, who was facing murder charges for killing two civilians in 2014, opened fire on policemen trying to an arrest warrant over the weekend. No policemen were killed or injured in the fighting, according to Col. Jaime Mojica, the provincial police director.
Following intelligence reports, Mojica said police forces tracked down Biting’s hideout in Tanduh Bagua village. He said policemen rushed Biting to hospital, but attending doctors declared the man dead.
“The suspect had been a fugitive criminal with Criminal Case No. 1657 for crimes of Double Murder and Frustrated Murder, issued by the Presiding Judge, RTC, 9th Judicial Region, Branch 3 of Sulu dated January 23, 2018. The suspect was responsible for the deaths of Jboy Julpa and Wadz Omar Abubakar in 2014,” Mojica said.
He said policemen recovered Biting’s .45-caliber pistol and two magazines, adding the man’s family claimed the body and buried it immediately.
Brig. Gen. Arthur Cabalon, the regional police director, commended those involved in the operation and vowed to continue hunting criminals in Sulu, one of five provinces under the Bangsamoro autonomous region.
“I commend the operating units involved in the operation
for their unwavering efforts and continuous manhunt operations against wanted
persons, as well as the public for their active participation and collaboration
in PRO BAR’s (Police Regional Office in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region) campaign
against criminality,” he said. (Mindanao Examiner)
