Tornado ravages village in Sulu, leaves 3 casualties


ZAMBOANGA CITY – A tornado ravaged through a coastal village in Sulu, killing one person and wounded two others, and destroyed at least 40 houses, the provincial government said.

Governor Sakur Tan quickly dispatched several teams over the weekend to the remote island of Usadda in Pangutaran town to provide assistance to the victims and to assess the situation in the area after receiving the report.




Members of the relief teams from Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office led by its operations officer Farham Alfad distributed food and non-food items to those affected by the twister.

The family of the lone fatality also received P20,000 from Tan and the wounded P10,000 each, while P5,000 was given to each of the owners of the houses destroyed by the tornado.

The municipal government also provided relief assistance to the victims.

Tornado, a violently rotating column of air developed from severe thunderstorms in warm, moist, unstable air along and ahead of cold fronts. Such thunderstorms also may generate large hail and damaging winds. (Mindanao Examiner)
