Dozens rescued from sinking Zambo boat

ZAMBOANGA CITY - Maritime police and fishermen rescued dozens of passengers from an overloded boat which sunk off Zamboanga City in southern Philippines.

At least 38 passengers, including six children, and 10 crewmen survived the Saturday night tragedy, but one child remains missing.

The wooden boat was sailing to Santa Cruz Island, just several nautical miles from the pier here, when it tilted and slowly sunk until rescuers arrived and saved the passengers.

It was unclear how the boat managed to sail despite being overloaded with passengers and cargos.

Maritime authorities have mounted an investigation into the accident. There is no immediate statement from the local government or Coast Guard about it. (Mindanao Examiner)
