SOUTH COTABATO – A bomb explosion ripped through a provincial bus on Thursday and wounding over a dozen passengers in the restive southern Philippine region of Mindanao, police said.
Police said the bomb was planted in the overhead compartment of the bus – owned by Yellow Bus Line – and exploded as it travelled to the town of Polomolok in South Cotabato province. The bus came from Koronadal City and heading to General Santos City when the attack occurred.
The rebel group called Al Khobar has claimed responsibility for the blast and police said failed extortion was likely motive of the attack that wounded at least 18 people.
It was unknown how the bomber was able to sneak the explosive despite previous attacks on the bus firm in recent years.
Authorities have repeatedly told bus companies in the region to employ security guards and inspect bags of passengers and install security cameras, but all these had been ignored. (Mark Navales)
