ZAMBOANGA CITY – A policeman was shot dead on Saturday while jogging at the airport runway in the southern Filipino town of Jolo, officials said.
The officer, Espaldon Tingkahan, died instantly from the attack. His killer escaped after the shooting.
No individual or group claimed responsibility for the murder, but suspicion fell heavily on Abu Sayyaf rebels who are fighting for the establishment of an Islamic state in the predominantly Catholic country.
Initial report said Tingkahan’s attacker tailed him and then shot the officer at close range. The family of the 40-year old policeman did not give any statement and police authorities have launched an investigation into the attack.
It was unknown whether the killing was carried out by rebels or an offshoot of a clan war or family feud which is common in Jolo. (Mindanao Examiner)
