KIDAPAWAN CITY – Suspected communist rebels torched a commuter jeep on Monday in Koronadal City in southern Philippines, police said.
Police said two gunmen flagged down the jeep on the highway near a banana plantation in the village of San Roque. One of 19 passengers, believed to be the companion of the rebels, also held the driver Ricky Cano as gunpoint and ordered the others to disembark.
The trio later identified themselves as members of the New People’s Army, which has been fighting for many decades now for the establishment of a separate state.
The driver said the gunmen told him that the burning of the vehicle was a punitive action against the operator of the jeep, Teofilo Eloy.
None of the passengers were hurt in the attack which occurred just days after rebels detonated an improvised explosive that killed a government militia and a civilian in the province of Compostela Valley.
The blast also wounded 14 army soldiers and a villager in Mabini town where the military was conducting humanitarian works. (Mindanao Examiner)
