Village chieftain in gold-rich Zambo town killed

PAGADIAN CITY – Motorcycle gunmen shot dead a village chieftain in an attack in the gold-rush town of Bayog in Zamboanga del Sur province in southern Philippines, police said on Tuesday.
Police spokesman Rogelio Alabata said the attackers killed the 46-year old Romeo Sungcad while heading home with his wife on a motorcycle in Dipili village. The woman was spared by the killers, who escaped after shooting Sungcad, the village chieftain of Depore.
“The victim sustained a lone gunshot wound in the head causing his untimely death. The suspects fled towards unknown direction after the incident. Hot pursuit operation is now being conducted by PNP elements of Bayog for possible arrest and identification of the suspects,” he said.
The motive of the killing is still unknown, but the former Depore village chieftain Francisco Arado, 59, was also killed along with his secretary Editha Navarro, 62, in an attack in April 2012 that also wounded a small scale miner Ernesto Mancao, 62.
And in July 2014, police arrested a former soldier - Edison Acosta, of the 5th Infantry Battalion – in Roseller Lim town in the neighboring province of Zamboanga Sibugay in connection to the twin murders. (Mindanao Examiner)
