Tight guarding for Wuhan coronavirus in Zambo

‘Mayor Beng urges residents to maintain
cleanliness, hygiene’

MAYOR BENG Climaco has urged residents in Zamboanga to always maintain cleanliness and good hygiene practises as the local government took steps to prevent the entry of the Wuhan coronavirus here and protect the public’s health.

Dozens had died and thousands are feared infected by the deadly virus which broke out last month - although it was first reported in December - in Wuhan, the capital of Central China’s Hubei province and spread in other countries by people who contracted the coronavirus, also called nCoV and symptoms include nasal congestion, headache, cough, sore throat, and a fever.

“Let us maintain cleanliness in our surroundings and proper hygiene to ensure good health,” Climaco said.

She said the City Health Office (CHO) continues to coordinate with the Department of Health (DOH), the Bureau of Quarantine, and airport and seaport authorities in the implementation of health protocols and intensified screening procedures for all passengers and travellers, especially those who came from China and Malaysia - which has 4 reported cases of the coronavirus - to prevent the entry of the nCoV.

Just recently, Vice Mayor Rommel Agan also met with representatives from the City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office and CHO, and other stakeholders. He said there is a need to focus and intensify screening and assessment of passengers and travellers, including deportees from Malaysia since Zamboanga has a regular ferry service to Sandakan in Sabah.

“We directed our CHO to coordinate with DOH to intensify screening and hopefully puede kita man prevent el entrada na Zamboanga City (del nCoV),” he said.

City Health Officer Dr. Dulce Miravite said there has been no report of the Wuhan coronavirus in Zamboanga. “Here in Zamboanga, we do not have a case yet, and we want to keep it that way,” she said.

An inter-agency task force for the nCoV has been activated, and both local and national government agencies are regularly meeting to continuously thresh out protection measures and protocols.

Miravite said individuals, who have history of travel in countries with confirmed nCoV cases, should take caution, self-quarantine, and seek immediate consultation with medical professionals.

“Si etu sabe tu estaba tu este places tiene cases, man isolate kita, de ya anda na crowded places, si tiene cough and colds usa ya mask, y man consult earlier,” she said.

Several countries have confirmed cases of the coronavirus, including France, Japan, Australia, United States, Canada, Malaysia, Nepal, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Miravite echoed the mayor’s call to residents to maintain proper hygiene by regularly washing hands with soap and water, and drink enough water, avoid alcohol and smoking and to cover mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, and not to spit in public areas.

According to Science Alert which quoted China's National Health Commission Minister Ma Xiaowei, a person with the Wuhan coronavirus could be infectious to others before they know they have the virus.

Xiaowei said someone with the virus could show no symptoms they have the coronavirus anytime between a day and 14 days. During that time, an asymptomatic person is also infectious and could spread the coronavirus to others, which makes it difficult to stop its spread. (Zamboanga Post)
