PAGADIAN CITY – Three gunmen shot dead a policeman inside a bus while
travelling in the southern Philippine province of Zamboanga del Norte,
officials said Saturday.
Officials said Master Sergeant Chito Lagahit was on his way to work in
Baliguian town from Dipolog City when the attack occurred late Friday afternoon.
The gunmen posed as passengers and seated near him when when they shot Lagahit.
Major Helen Galvez, a regional police spokeswoman, said an investigation
was launched to determine the motive of the murder and the identities of the
killers. “The Baliguian
municipal police station is conducting a thorough investigation to possibly
identify, locate and arrest the suspects,” she said.
Galvez said the gunmen also fired at the front of the bus and warned terrified
passengers not to panic before escaping. “The suspects also fired shots toward the
direction of the driver hitting the front windshield and uttered words in Visayan
dialect - Ayaw lang mo ka panic kay isa ra amua tuyo.” (Don’t panic. We are
only after this one.)
No
individual or group claimed responsibility for the killing and it was unknown
whether communist rebels or guns for hire were behind the murder. The police
did not elaborate on Lagahit’s background. (Zamboanga Post)
