Health officials: Face masks are for those with sickness

HEALTHY PEOPLE may not necessarily wear face masks for protection against the Novel Coronavirus (nCoV). Instead, personal hygiene is highly encouraged.

Health officials in Zamboanga del Norte province clarified the wearing of face masks are given priority to those who are sick with colds, fever, cough among others, as they are highly susceptible in contracting diseases.

Medical personnel and those attending to patients with respiratory diseases are also advised to wear masks.

The statement was issued in response to the short supply of face masks in the province and neighboring areas after the first case of the Coronavirus in the country was announced nationwide.

“There is no need to panic. We are constantly monitoring the situation in the province and has coordinated with all concerned government agencies for concerted effort. We have no nCoV cases here,” said Dr. Esmeralda Nadela, provincial health officer and chief of the Zamboanga del Norte Medical Center.

The provincial government convened recently various government line agencies and the media to discuss updates and preventive measures against nCoV.

“The best way to protect ourselves from contracting the infection is through regular handwashing, covering the mouth when coughing or sneezing, and of course, personal hygiene and sanitation,” stressed Dr. Nadela.

She said it is with living a healthy lifestyle that we can be assured of protection not only of the Coronavirus but of any other diseases.

DOH is also calling on the public to refrain from sharing on social media unverified information relative to the spread of Coronavirus that may cause panic and confusion. (By Emmanuel D. Taghoy)
