THE WAR on illegal drugs has been at the forefront of the agenda of the Duterte administration since day one. One of the reasons for this is because President Rodrigo Roa Duterte gives importance to the value of the Filipino family to society and how it should be spared from the damaging effects of illegal drug use.
President Duterte, in his speech at the Joint Graduation Ceremonies of Public Safety Officers Advance Course (PSOAC) 2019-18 and Public Safety Officer Basic Course (PSOBC) 2019-07 on Feb. 20 in Davao City, discussed with the newly-graduated law enforcers that if illegal drugs prevail there will be a degradation of society stemming from the Filipino family itself.
“Dito sa atin ganito yan, kung ang tatay mag shabu wasak talaga yan – the family will collapse (Here in our country, if the father starts using ‘shabu’ his family will be destroyed),” President Duterte said.
The degradation of the family brought about by illegal drugs will also affect the financial sustenance of a family – driving other members of the family to opt for means of employment that is open to abuse and is questionable in nature.
“Itong asawa naman mag hanap ng trabaho – they are a very easy prey sa mga recruiter … pag dating doon sa middle east tingnan mo ang nangyari sa kanila. They are treated like slaves, fed garbage, and they are being sexually abused every night. (The wives will look for employment – they are a very easy prey for recruiters … once they arrive in the Middle East look at what will happen to them.),” added President Duterte.
As of January 9, 2020, the Duterte Administration’s campaign against illegal drugs has cleared over 16,709 barangays of illegal drugs which translated to 2,799 children rescued from activities involving illegal drugs and lifted 5.9 million families out of poverty.(By Kevin Caro)
