MAYOR BENG Climaco has appealed to residents to maintain cleanliness and sanitation and avoid spitting in public spaces because it is uncouth and can spread infectious diseases.
Climaco has instructed the City Health Officer Dr. Dulce Miravite and City Administrator Marie Angelique Go to implement a strict anti-spitting campaign aimed at stopping the insanitary and obnoxious habit.
She said spitting in public is a health hazard, especially now the deadly Wuhan coronavirus which emanated from China spread quickly to different countries. “We need to tell people to stop spitting in public spaces to prevent the spread of communicable diseases,” the mayor said.
Shoppers also complained that betel chewing is prevalent at market places and people who practice this frequently spit out on streets.
Climaco reminded the public of an existing ordinance against public spitting.
According to health experts, betel chewing is considered likely unsafe when taken by mouth long-term or in high doses. Some of the chemicals in betel nut have been associated with cancer. Other chemicals are poisonous.
It can also cause more severe effects including vomiting, diarrhea, gum problems, increased saliva, chest pain, abnormal heart beats, low blood pressure, shortness of breath and rapid breathing, heart attack, coma, and death. It can also trigger asthma and might slow down heart beat and gastrointestinal tract blockage and ulcers, including the risk of seizures and urinary tract obstruction and emphysema. (Zamboanga Post)
