ZAMBOANGA CITY continues to tighten its watch for the deadly Wuhan coronavirus that has affected at least 33 people in the country.
Although Zamboanga remains free from the disease, Mayor Beng Climaco ordered the City Health Office to further intensify its monitoring after President Rodrigo Duterte declared the spread of the virus as “public health emergency.”
The Department of Health raised the coronavirus alert to Code Red (sub level 1) following the rising number of people infected with the disease.
Climaco reminded residents to always maintain cleanliness and good hygiene practises even as the local government continues to protect the public’s health against the Wuhan coronavirus also called coronavirus disease or COVID-19.
“We need to strictly monitor or intensify more our monitoring to ensure Zamboanga City is free from the coronavirus. Let’s us all maintain cleanliness, wash our hands frequently with soap and water, or alcohol and be sure to cover mouth when sneezing or coughing,” Climaco said.
City Health Officer Dr. Dulce Miravite said they have strengthened prevention measures and is taking extra caution and steps to include in its monitoring not only individuals with travel history to countries with travel restrictions, but also individuals with local travels to areas in the country with confirmed coronavirus cases.
“Residents, who have recently travelled, even asymptomatic, are urged to coordinate with the City Health Office thru their hotline 955-9601 or 0966-175-4298 for advice and guidance. If tiene tu travel history, asymptomatic, we ask you to still coordinate with us so we can monitor while in home quarantine,” Miravite said.
Miravite encouraged residents to regularly wash hands, follow cough etiquette, and avoid crowded places. Cough etiquette is a series of actions to take if you are coughing or sneezing, which are designed to reduce the spread of respiratory illness to others. “Residents are advised to stay home if sick or avoid contact with sick people, and avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth,” she said.
