PAGADIAN
CITY – A cargo truck loaded with timbers overturned in Zamboanga del Sur’s Pitogo
town leaving over a dozen passengers dead and injured, police said Monday.
Police
said the passengers were mostly workers transporting the timbers when the
truck’s braking system failed and the driver lost control of the steering
wheel.
The mishap, which occurred on Sunday afternoon in the village of Liguac,
killed 8 workers instantly, including a teenager, who were all pinned by the
timbers.
The
driver, Leolito Tam, surrendered to the police and is facing criminal charges.
Major
Helen Galvez, a regional police spokeswoman, identified the fatalities as Rey
Alfornon, 24; Orlando Sabejon, 44, Noel Cabellon, 19; Berlindo Labador, 34;
Edwin delos Santos, 70; Marvin Hemang, 3; Loui Jay Omandam, 34, and the 15-year
old boy.
The
injured, Galvez said, were taken to hospital in Margosatubig town. Their
identities were not released by the police and their condition is unknown.
