DAVAO OCCIDENTAL l Governor Claude Bautista ordered on Friday the release of financial assistance to hog-raisers who are affected by the African swine fever (ASF) that hit the area early this year.
Bautista earlier vowed the provincial government will compensate all those who voluntarily surrendered their hogs and swine to authorities for culling at the height of the ASF pandemic in the province.
Although Davao Occidental is a fourth-class province, the governor assured the province will not abandon its commitment to those who heeded the call to submit their inventory of hogs for culling to prevent the disease from further spreading.
Marivic Flores Hubac, the executive assistant to the governor, said more or less PHP50 million from the local fund is released to the hog-raisers in four municipalities of Davao Occidental beginning April 16.
The beneficiaries of the financial assistance come from the towns of Malita, Sta. Maria, Don Marcelino, and Jose Abad Santos. The municipality of Sarangani had no reported ASF infection.
Hubac said each hog-raiser will receive PHP3,500 per head of boar and PHP2,000 per head for fatteners.
He said the 4,000 affected hog-raisers are located in 25 villages of Malita, three villages of Sta. Maria, 15 villages in Don Marcelino, and five villages in Jose Abad Santos (JAS).
On top of the payout from the provincial government, Hubac said the affected hog-raisers are also set to receive financial assistance from the Department of Agriculture.
