Philippines holds 8 Vietnamese poachers


ZAMBOANGA CITY – Philippine authorities are holding 8 Vietnamese fishermen for poaching off Taganak Island in the southern province of Tawi-Tawi.
The foreigners - Tran Van Phuc, Nguyen Thanh Doan, Nguyen Thanh Tung, Tran Thanh Luy, Thach Trong, Nguyen Trung Hieu, Nguyen Tan Luc, and Nguyen Van Kham - were crew members of a Filipino fishing boat owned by Al-Amin Ismael, according to Lt. Gen. Cirilito Sobejano, chief of the Western Mindanao Command.

He said the fishing boat, FB Amina, was intercepted on April 3 after the group of Mayor Mohammad Faizal Jamalul spotted them while transporting relief aid to islanders. The official, who was accompanied by municipal employees and escorted by policemen, arrested the Vietnamese.

Sobejana they are preparing charges against the Vietnamese who are currently being investigated. 

“The apprehended personalities are currently undergoing investigation while the vessel was temporarily held near the Taganak shoreline. We are consolidating all necessary documents for the filing of appropriate charges against them,” he said.

Sobejana also held a maritime inter-agency meeting on Monday in Zamboanga and discussed measures to protect the country’s territorial waters from poachers.

He said they have tightened security patrol in Tawi-Tawi near the border with Sabah in Malaysia following the arrest of the foreigners. “Convergence and lateral coordination are very vital to ensure security posture and address challenges in our maritime domain,” he said.

No other details were made available by the military and it was unknown whether the Vietnamese have permit to work or if the boat owner would also be charged or not. (Zamboanga Post)
