THE DEPARTMENT of Health (DOH) 7 (Central Visayas) said a seven-year-old girl is the region’s youngest coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) patient.
Dr. Jaime Bernadas, DOH-7 director, said Friday the girl is from Barangay Mambaling here, the same village where a 70-year-old, the region’s oldest patient, was also recorded the previous day.
The two were among the 122 individuals found positive of Covid-19 who were tested last Wednesday.
Barangay Mambaling, which has a population of 32,564, now has 550 confirmed infections, according to the late Thursday posting of the Cebu City Health Department (CCHD).
Bernadas said the 122 new positive cases in Central Visayas were among the 520 individuals who submitted themselves for swab specimen collection for analysis at the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center sub-national laboratory.
Of the 122, three were retests, he said.
Because of the 122 new cases, Central Visayas now has a total of 1,579 Covid-19 cases.
“The region has two additional laboratory negatives from previously confirmed cases, bringing the total laboratory negative cases in the region to 31,” Bernadas said.
He also disclosed that the latest mortality due to Covid-19 was a 48-year-old man, a resident of Mandaue City.
“We are waiting for the official cause of death from the hospital where he was admitted. We join his family in praying for his eternal rest,” Bernadas said.
Central Visayas now has a total of 18 deaths due to Covid-19.
“The additional confirmed cases and deaths have slightly decreased, the case fatality rate or the percentage of deaths among those who are infected with Covid-19, from 1.16 percent to 1.14 percent. It is very much lower compared to the global average of 6.4 percent,” he added. (By John Rey Saavedra)
