THE BUREAU of Immigration (BI) on Thursday said that it has deported seven foreign nationals in a bid to decongest its detention facility in Taguig City amid the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) crisis.
“From April 15, 2020, those deported are five Chinese, one of them is a pregnant woman; a Taiwanese, and a South Korean,” BI spokesperson Dana Sandoval said in a Viber message.
Meanwhile, two other foreigners were granted bail.
“The pregnant women on bail are (a Cameroonian national and Indonesian),” she added.
Meanwhile, BI Warden Facility chief Remiecar Caguiron said more deportations are expected in the coming weeks.
This came after the bureau's legal division identified deportation cases that can already be expedited as well as those who are eligible for bail.
Meanwhile, the Bureau of Immigration (BI) also reported that 75 of its personnel assigned at the facility in Taguig, and 84 foreign detainees have tested negative for Covid-19.
BI Medical Section chief, Dr. Marites Ambray said the 159 individuals underwent rapid antibody tests on Tuesday at the detention facility located inside Camp Bagong Diwa.
She added that due to the limited number of test kits, only 84 of the more than 400 alien inmates were tested.
Those considered at risk of contracting the virus, such as senior citizens and those with underlying medical conditions, were prioritized.
BI Commissioner Jaime Morente welcomed the test results as a positive sign that protocols and measures instituted by the Bureau are helping prevent the spread of Covid-19 among detainees and employees at the facility.
