THE TOP legal counsel of Cebu City on Thursday said the city government is now preparing to implement measures as the city transitions to modified enhanced community quarantine (MECQ) on May 16.
Lawyer Rey Gealon, however, said Mayor Edgardo Labella submitted a petition before the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Disease (IATF-EID), for the retention of enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) status so that it can continue its stringent protocols in combating the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19).
“We filed a petition to ask the IATF that we don’t want the MECQ yet and we want to retain the restrictions in ECQ. We filed the petition together with the cities of Mandaue and Lapu-Lapu. But many people have asked what if Cebu City will finally be placed under MECQ,” Gealon, who also acts as Labella's spokesperson, said in Cebuano during a briefing on Thursday.
Gealon said Labella has given specific instructions to make the city government ready in case IATF Resolution No. 35, placing this city, among other areas, under MECQ will be implemented on May 16.
On Tuesday, Labella, along with Mayors Jonas Cortes and Junard Chan of Mandaue and Lapu-Lapu Cities, respectively, said in a joint statement that they preferred to retain the ECQ status so that they can continue with the strategic testing targeting close to 47,000 residents in the three cities.
Meanwhile, the Cebu City Health Department (CCHD) has recorded a total of 75 patients who have recovered from Covid-19, as of Thursday.
The CCHD also recorded 12 new cases from Barangays Mambaling (5), Suba, (3), Duljo (2) Carreta (1), and T. Padilla (1), bringing the total number of coronavirus-positive residents to 1,699.
Gealon also said that of the total number of recovered patients, 44 are from Sitio Zapatera, the locked-down sub-village in Barangay Luz.
“All of the recovered patients from Zapatera will be transferred to the Barangay Isolation Center (BIC) and will be given new hygiene kits and new beddings to ensure their stay in a Covid-free facility. They could not bring their things to the new facility if no disinfection is done,” he said.
The recovered patients will stay in the facility for another 14 days of quarantine before they can be given the go signal to go back to their residence.
The mortality in this city due to Covid-19 remains at 12, the CCHD said.
Of the 38 infected barangays as of Thursday, Barangay Mambaling remains to have the highest number of confirmed cases with 615, followed by Suba with 136, Luz with 201, and Labangon with 128.
