DESPITE THE disruption of health services due to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, the Department of Health (DOH)-10 continues to provide assistance for immuno-compromised citizens specifically persons affected by Human Immunodeficiency Virus / Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome (HIV/AIDS).
Recently, the Northern Mindanao Medical Center Treatment Hub has received anti-retroviral drugs for its HIV-support program amounting to P 1,249,692 that will be ditributed to all satellite hubs across the region.
Nurse Ian Jose Baang, DOH-10 HIV Support Program staff said the treatment hub for HIV patients is the Northern Mindanao Medical Center (NMMC) but because of the implementation of general community quarantine (GCQ), a lot of immuno-compromised patients could no longer travel here. So, satellite treatment hubs are set up at Advestist Medical Center in Maramag, Bukidnon, Amai Pakpak Medical Center in Marawi City, Mayor Hilarion A. Ramiro, Sr. Medical Center in Ozamiz City as well as in the province of Camiguin and Gingoog City.
With the estimated incidence of HIV/AIDS in the country remaining at 0.1% of the total population (as of last year’s survey), the country has the lowest rates of infection, yet has one of the fastest-growing numbers of cases worldwide.
“Our services are also going on like community-based training with personal protective equipment (PPEs). We also have a continuous partnership/coordination with the Southern Philippines Medical Center (SPMC) in Davao to give support to Davao-affected clients," Baang added. (By Vincent Philip S.
