THE PANGASINAN Police Provincial Office (PPPO) has reduced the duty hours to protect the health of its police force manning the checkpoints in the province amid the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic.
In a radio interview over Aksyon Radyo Pangasinan, PPPO director Col. Redrico Maranan said the immune system of the police might have been weakened due to almost two months’ exposure in the checkpoints.
He said the police are more vulnerable to illnesses, such as the Covid-19, with a weak immune system.
Maranan said with the new directive, police manning checkpoints in the province were provided with a resting area where they can take a nap after a four-hour duty.
"We are considering the well-being of our police force because it's not easy for a man to be exposed under the sun and dust for 12 hours because his immune system may be compromised," he said.
Maranan added they did not lessen the number of police at the checkpoints but instead duty shifts became more frequent to provide them time to rest.
He said members of the Pangasinan police force remain Covid-19-free as of this posting.
"During the conduct of (a) rapid test to our police, there were four who tested positive but upon the confirmatory test, results, later on, came out negative," he added.
Maranan further said they are waiting for the guidelines coming from the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF-EID) on the new status as the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) in the province which is scheduled to tomorrow, May 15.
