GOVERNOR VICTOR Yu appealed to the public not to be complacent about COVID-19 even when the province moved from enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) to general community quarantine (GCQ).
Yu made an appeal after he signed Executive Order No. 2020-14 lifting the enhanced community quarantine and placing the entire province of Zamboanga del Sur under general community quarantine (GCQ) which took effect on May 1, this year.
In a press conference, Yu the chairman of provincial task force on Covid-19 (PTF COVID-19) decided to shift the status of the province from ECQ to GCQ after an intensive discussion with the municipal mayors and medical teams, and upon the concurrence of the interagency task force on emerging infectious diseases (IATF-EID).
Yu said there are only slight changes in the implementation of GCQ from ECQ adding that most of the provisions of the ECQ are still enforced.
“The GCQ highlights the partial reopening of the economy by allowing the operation of public transport system and business establishments, he added.
Under section 15 of the EO, it stressed that public transportation may resume or continue operation within the province provided that transport operations shall be strictly limited within the province only. It also provides that public transport vehicles are mandated to carry only 50% or less of their normal capacity, ensure the observance of strict physical/social distancing , the use of alcohol or hand sanitizers , and wearing of face masks and other means of coverings for all messengers and drivers at all times as well as provide protective dividers/coverings.
He said measures that were put in place during the ECQ such as social distancing, use of alcohol and sanitizer, wearing of face mask, and temperature check, have to be observed.
The governor said that with the implementation of GCQ, he is expecting that the public will always stay calm and vigilant saying that the province is still in the precarious situation due to the threat of COVID-19.
“We ask you to always be calm and vigilant because we have 4 positive cases of Covid-19 in Zamboanga del Sur Medical Center (ZDSMC),” Yu said.
“We are in a very alarming situation since there are 34 swab samples delivered to the Regional Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM) but we have no results yet. We don’t know if there are possible or probable cases from the samples we’ve sent,” Yu declared.
Yu is apprehensive that a local transmission will occur because the number of cases is increasing despite the strict implementation of ECQ for almost two months already.
He then appealed to the public to cooperate and obey the quarantine measures saying that provincial government is doing its best to protect the people from the infection and spread of the Covid-19 pandemic.
