Enough personnel, assets for Covid-19, rainy season

THE NATIONAL Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) on Tuesday assured that it has sufficient personnel and assets to help with the ongoing coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) containment efforts and respond to the effects of the rainy season.

"Yes, we do. We are handling both support functions to the Covid (19) and emergency response. As before, we work closely with all government agencies especially the local government units, private sector partners, and the public (in addressing these emergencies)," said NDRRMC spokesperson Mark Cashean Timbal in a message to the Philippine News Agency (PNA) when asked if they still have sufficient resources to respond to emergencies caused by inclement weather conditions.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) officially declared the start of the rainy season in the country on June 12.
Timbal said the NDRRMC has issued guidelines on rainy season preparedness amid the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.
"We have issued Memorandum 54 (which) contains guidelines for preparations, protection against the virus, usage of DRRM funds, as well as response and evacuation processes," he added.
The Office of Civil Defense is the implementing arm of the NDRRMC, which is mandated to "administer disaster preparedness and manage the consequences of disasters while it continues to carry out its part on the Covid-19 response." (By Priam Nepomuceno)
